Together with other NGOs and academics, this position paper sets out why we need to set targets to reduce EU resource consumption and waste generation in the European Commission's new Circular Economy Action Plan, ahead of its release in March 2020. We urge that a headline target to halve the EU material footprint by 2030 is included and that a binding EU target to cap waste absolute generation per capita is set.

EU demand for beef, soy (for animal feed) and palm oil is driving deforestation in the Global South. This briefing looks at what is driving the problem, the limitations of current approaches to tackle it (including sustainability certification schemes), and proposes a way forward based on a broad policy perspective based on ensuring food sovereignty.

Europe urgently needs to transition to clean and safe renewable energy. To prevent the worst effects of climate change, this transition needs to be very fast. However, lack of public support is currently slowing down the energy transition.

An obscure investment agreement, the Energy Charter Treaty (ECT), threatens to undermine bold climate action to transform Europe’s energy system.

But as negotiations begin for the reform of the treaty, this paper asks, is it beyond repair? When it comes to ending its protection for fossil fuels, and scrapping investor rights for climate-damaging industries, the 'modernisation' could be doomed to fail.

Plastic is one of the fastest-growing pollutants in the world, and citizens are calling for solutions. The EU has taken important steps to restrict single-use plastics, but this is just a start. We call on the EU to step-up its actions and show global leadership to tackle plastic pollution at source.

With money and meetings, subsidies and sponsorships, the oil and gas lobby is fuelling the climate disaster.

Since 2010, just five oil and gas corporations and their fossil fuel lobby groups have spent at least a quarter of a billion euros buying influence at the heart of European decision-making.

This briefing exposes not just the hundreds of millions these oil and gas majors have spent on lobbying the EU, but the wide variety of underhand tactics they’ve used to successfully water down effective climate legislation.

23 October 2019

A civil society statement, supported by nearly 200 organisations worldwide declaring: "We are facing a climate emergency, created by the fossil fuel industry. We demand fossil free politics."

Similar to existing restrictions on tobacco industry lobbyists, we need a firewall that protects our democratic institutions and our decision-making from fossil fuel industry interference: no more private lobby meetings, partnerships, or collaboration.

Reusable alternatives to wasteful single-use plastics are on the rise across Europe, and national governments have the tools at their disposal to boost them and slash plastic pollution. This report shows how a mixture of public and private initiatives are slashing the consumption of single-use plastic packaging and products across Europe, including deposit-return schemes, and reusable cup and food container inituatives.
